Apprenticeship Description

WDR’s course stands out from the crowd as a powerful, practical and person centred development course. On successful completion of this course you will be offered the opportunity to join the British Computer Society Register of IT Technicians as a member of a nationally recognised body in this field.

This course is designed for people pursuing a career as a Software Developer, enabling them to develop the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work effectively as a team to build and test simple, high-quality code across front end, logic and database layers to customer specifications. A developer will typically be working as part of a larger team, in which they will have responsibility for some of the straightforward elements of the overall project. This course will support you in developing the skill set to deliver measurable value to organisations as a creative software developer.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Typically, GCSE Maths & English at Grade C or above. This can vary for each course so please get in touch with us for more information.​

Learners without level 2 English and Maths qualifications will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.​

DURATION

22 months

During this course you will be required to spend 20% of your time at work on off-the-job learning. This will include workshops, virtual learning, research and reflection. This innovative course is designed so you can easily fit your learning around your day job. Using our online portal, you will be able to access your learning anytime and anywhere, so you get high-quality content and development on the go.

Key learning areas on this apprenticeship

Programming: Acquiring proficiency in cutting code. Developing skills in the use of a modern IDE, Integrated Development Environment. Building all manner of code constructs from basic specifications. Debugging and compiling or interpreting your own code. Reading and working with the code produced by others.

Software Development: Consider the seven generic stages of the software development lifecycle be it in an AGILE process or the Waterfall methodology. Compare and contrast the serial processes of the Waterfall with sprints, scrums and project backlogs of AGILE. Relate each Methodology to key deliverables. Review and relate the various roles of staff who work in the two methodology variants. Blend this consideration with analysis of what makes teams effective.

How will you be assessed?

Towards the end of the course, you, your manager and WDR will decide together if you are ready for assessment. The assessment is then undertaken by a separate End Point Assessor organisation, chosen by your employer. The tutors at WDR will provide you with lots of support in preparing for the assessment. The assessment consists of four separate elements:

Portfolio assessment - produced towards the end of the apprenticeship from real work projects.

Project - business related one-week period away from the standard office environment.

Structured interview - exploring work in the portfolio and the project.

An employer reference.
